The Friends of Geographical Names of Alberta Society is a registered, non-profit organization, formed in 1987 to promote awareness of Alberta’s place names. Our 60 members, located throughout Alberta, work to encourage public interest in the rich legacy reflected in Alberta’s geographical names. The Society is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Directors-at-large and Ex-Officio members as elected. Major sources of funding include membership fees, donations and an annual grant from Alberta Community Development. The Society produces a newsletter on a quarterly basis. Other  initiatives include the community "Name Your Place" project, the "Alberta Namedropper" program aimed at Grade 4 students and publication of the 4-volume set, Place Names of Alberta.
