Bar U Ranch National Historic Site

The Bar U Ranch paints a colourful picture of ranching history, with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. Step into the Visitor Centre, where you’ll be welcomed to the Bar U and introduced to its people and its story. The exhibits and video The Mighty Bar U will pique your curiosity before you join a costumed interpreter for a one-hour guided tour of the original ranch headquarters.

There, you’ll see 35 historic structures, built between 1881 and 1950. It is easy to imagine life as a ranch hand while walking through them. Pop in to the working blacksmith shop where horseshoes are hammered into shape, or speak with the postmistress outside the Pekisko Post Office. While on tour, you’ll also hear stories of the men, women and children who worked on the ranch, and of the influence of local First Nations.

Be sure to stop by the Bar U Ranch Roadhouse for some homestyle cooking. And you won’t want to miss the Pekisko Creek General Store, which is stocked to the rafters with authentic western wear, souvenirs and local arts and crafts.

Call for hours. Custom tours available. Admission is charged. 100 km (62 miles) south of Calgary; 15 km (9 miles) south of Longview via Hwy 22. . Toll free .
