Though widely recognized as the Forest Capital of Canada and a hub of oil and gas production, Grande Prairie has also flourished recently as a significant centre for the arts, in particular landscape painting. Foremost among the galleries is the Prairie Art Gallery, where many works by recognized local artists, such as Euphemia McNaught, Jim Stokes, Peter Von Tiesenhausen and Robert Guest, are featured, along with other important Albertan and Canadian works. Major Canadian traveling exhibits also come to the gallery regularly.
The Prairie Art Gallery is community oriented, providing an education program, sponsoring traveling exhibits of its major works, and operating an art rental service. The gallery also performs art appraisals, documentation and framing. Art auctions and membership exhibits are held regularly.
Open Tues-Fri 10-6, Sat-Sun 1-5. Admission by donation. Giftshop. Located in the old Grande Prairie High School, 10209-99 Street, Grande Prairie. .
