The Old West can still be felt in Calgary. Stephen Avenue, its original main street, teems with ghosts of Cowboys and Indians, fortune-seekers and red-coated Mounties.
Calgarys spectacular growth began with the coming of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883. A fire in 1886 destroyed most of the original wood boomtown front buildings. The sandstone structures that replaced them gave rise to the nickname Sandstone City. Many are still standing today on Stephen Avenue.
Ranching was the areas first industry, and by the early part of the 20th century, agriculture was driving Calgarys economic growth. In 1912 Stephen Avenue hosted the first Calgary Stampede Parade, celebrating the ranching era. The Stampede has since grown into an international event-every summer Stephen Avenue rings with country and western music and dancing.
A heritage resource of great national significance, Stephen Avenues pre-WWI buildings are being restored. Quality restaurants and shops can be found on Stephen Avenue, making this great main street the exciting centre of Calgary once again.
