Alberta's magnificent Legislature Building houses the Legislative Assembly and the offices of the Premier, Lieutenant Governor and elected members of the Legislative Assembly. Officially opened September 3, 1912, it is the province's foremost historic structure. Architectural features include hand-carved oak and mahogany, marble from Italy, massive Corinthian columns, and the landmark dome. The building rises near the original site of the Hudson's Bay Company's historic Fort Edmonton, overlooking the North Saskatchewan River and surrounded by acres of parkland.
The Legislature interpretive centre is located north of the building itself, just past the fountains. It features a range of displays that tell the story of Alberta and the building, and explain the parliamentary process. Special exhibits can also be found in the pedway linking the centre to the LRT station and the Legislature Building. The center's giftshop offers quality Alberta-made crafts and souvenirs, plus a wide selection of gifts.
