Government House

Between 1913 and 1938 this three-storey sandstone mansion served as the official residence of Alberta’s Lieutenant Governors. It was designed by R.P. Blakey, a noted architect who also designed portions of the Legislative Assembly Building. The site overlooks the North Saskatchewan River and is located on 28 acres of land in Glenora, one of Edmonton's most fashionable neighbourhoods. The house and furnishings are estimated to have cost about $350,000, a considerable sum in 1913.

The house was a centre of social and political life in the province until 1938, when the Social Credit government withdrew public funding for an official residence for the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The furnishings were sold in a public auction, and the house closed until 1942, when North West Airlines leased it as offices and accommodation for company personnel who flew aircraft on the Northwest Staging Route. In 1944 the building was converted yet again, into a convalescent hospital for wounded veterans. In 1964 the province reacquired the building and grounds as a site for the future Provincial Museum and Archives.
