Cochrane Ranche Historic Site

On this site, the first of the big ranches in the Canadian West was established in 1881 by Quebec businessman Senator M.H. Cochrane. Plentiful grass and water, cheap lease fees and high-quality cattle did not guarantee success. By 1883 hard winters closed the Ranche down, yet Cochrane had laid the foundation of Alberta’s beef cattle industry. Relive those early days through western interpretive programs and events.

Visitor centre open May 21-Labour Day weekend: daily 9-5. Ranche site open year round. Admission is charged. Located 30 km west of Calgary near the junction of Hwys 1A and 22. Summer: . Winter: . Within Alberta, dial to be connected toll free.
