Banff Springs Hotel

The original Banff Springs Hotel opened in 1886, a luxury resort built by the Canadian Pacific Railway to capitalize on the spectacular scenery and health-giving mineral springs. It was so successful that a much larger version was constructed between 1911 and 1928 in the style favoured for the railway hotels, based on French chateaux and Scottish castles. With its lavish decor inside and wilderness outside, the Banff Springs developed a worldwide reputation as a vacation spot and came to symbolize tourism in the Canadian Rockies. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1988.
