Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park

Drive just 2 1/2 hours north of Edmonton to reach exceptional sun-baked sand beaches and clear warm waters perfect for swimming and windsurfing. Devonshire Beach is beautiful and unspoiled, and you can walk barefoot in the sand for miles. In 1920 the Canadian Pacific Railway considered building one of its grand hotels here, where clams and seagulls on the beaches create the illusion of a freshwater ocean. Lesser Slave Lake is 108 km (68 miles) long, the largest automobile-accessible lake in Alberta.

Experience world-class fishing, explore hiking trails along the lakeshore or venture into the back country of the nearby Pelican Mountains. Wildlife of the boreal forest and foothills abound in this park, far from cities. Visit a migratory bird research station and watch field staff work with neotropical songbirds. Volunteers are always welcome and school groups

can book programs as well. The station is open from May 1 to September 30. Every May long weekend, the park hosts the Songbird Festival. Other park wildlife include moose, lynx, wolf and bear.

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park is situated in Canada's boreal forest, the largest and least understood ecosystem on the continent. Park interpretive programs reveal many fascinating stories and facts about this vast wilderness and its incredible human history. Experience and discover the park through self-guided trails and interpretive exhibits. Attend entertaining amphitheatre shows, hike to Lily Lake, or see the breathtaking view from the summit of Marten Mountain.

In winter, track-set cross country ski trails take you into a magical snow kingdom under the bright blue winter sky. Follow the tracks of the snowshoe hare on snowshoes! Don't worry about the cold; the park staff will greet you summer or winter with the customary northern warmth and hospitality!

The park is open year round, so come and visit, soon and often. Enjoy beach, wilderness, peace of mind, and unforgettable scenery all in Alberta's friendly north at Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park.
