Nanton Main Street

Pioneer traditions are still evident today on Nanton’s main street. The community’s western ranching roots are still growing, and its theme “Where History Lives” rings true. Settled in the late 1800s, Nanton reached village status in 1902. It was surveyed, the population doubled, and buildings sprang up. Incorporated in 1907, it became a settlement of comparative wealth, attracting people from the east and the United States.

Nanton is privileged to be the first Alberta Main Street project of its size. Located on busy Highway 2, the town of 1,600 souls has a large inventory of historic buildings, most constructed in the early days of settlement. It is expected that 10 buildings will be completed by the end of 1997, ranging from full facade work to signage and awnings.

Nanton is committed to preserving its history by respecting its past as a foundation for its future. As the program continues, more prizes of yesteryear will be discovered and appreciated by locals and visitors alike.

Office open weekdays 8:30-5. 1907-21 Avenue, Nanton. .
